Recap | Migas El Asador Brunch and Porron Contest

Standard

They ate, they drank, they poured. Diners at Migas last Saturday raised rmb3123 for Maovember by joining this popular Spanish restaurant’s el asador brunch and porron contest.

As per Migas tradition, the Saturday brunch saw a steady stream of food carts circulate, piled with roast chicken, a range of house sausages, lamb chops, spare ribs and Chilean wagyu beef. Patrons could also load up at the salad, bread, soup, tortilla and dessert stations, with the latter featuring mustache-shaped cookies.

Fully stuffed, everyone’s attention turned to the porron contest, moderated by Aitor Olebagoya. The eight participants went through eight grueling delicious rounds. One measured how long they could pour wine into their mouths without breaking the stream. Another gave bonus points for bouncing the stream off one’s upper lip — the mustache zone — and into one’s mouth. Yet another involved using a measuring tape to determine the stream length. And then there was a final round where contestants simultaneously used two porrons. The winner received a bottle of Torres Mas La Plana wine!

Funds were raised via the drink revenue from the brunch and entry fees for the porron contest, an event Migas will hopefully repeat soon!

Sports bar Paddy O’Shea’s held its second annual charity quiz last Wednesday night, with about ten teams taking the challenge. True to the spirit of Maovember, quiz master Jo included plenty of facial hair-related brain-teasers, including questions about famous mustache-wearers from Groucho Marx to Tom Selleck to Freddie Mercury.

The event raised rmb1940 for Maovember, with the money coming via an optional rmb100 team entry fee, which included a tower of Tiger beer, and tickets for a raffle with a large range of prizes (see here). Nice work!

Event | Cafe de la Poste to host France-China wine taste test, plus Office Basket-Bola!

Standard

cafe de la poster 2 blind tasting for maovember

Enjoy eight wines — and test your taste buds — with Cafe de la Poste on November 19. Taste four pairs of wines and, for each pair, try to guess which one is from China and which one is from France. The lineup will include two whites and two reds.

The taste test starts at 7:30 PM, gets each participant eight tasters (about a half-glass each), and only costs rmb 100, with all proceeds to Maovember to fund cataract surgery for elderly men in rural China. Plus, it gives you the chance to see if you can tell French and Chinese wines apart! Guess all of the wines correctly and get into a draw for a prize.

(RSVP via 6402-7047 or justinbarthelemy78 on wechat.)

Adding more fun to the evening, Cafe de la Poste will host “Office Basket-Bola“, making a fundraiser from that time-tested habit of tossing paper balls into a waste basket.

Pay only rmb 5, scrunch up your paper, and take a shot at the wastepaper basket. Every shot that goes in wins you a free shot of alcohol — and entry into a draw for a bigger prize. Maybe it’ll end up something like this.

Event | Third Maovember Cornhole Classic at IV / Hockey Bar this Saturday

Standard

irish volunteer charity corntoss classic village grouches sponsored by steven schwankert of sinoscuba.jpg

This Saturday will see the third annual Maovember corn hole classic at Irish Volunteer / Hockey Bar. Expect plenty of excitement as sixteen teams try to toss their way to victory, and prizes, in this single elimination tournament. There are still a half-dozen spaces available: book yours by contacting Trish Smith at trishsmithus@gmail.com. The entry fee is rmb100 per team, all funds to Maovember.

Irish Volunteer’s Zach Lewison and Hockey Bar’s Curtis Dracz will provide officiating and scoring while Tom McCabe returns with color commentary and player interviews. Orbis rep and Irish Volunteer co-owner George Smith will throw out the first bag and explain how Maovember funds are used for cataract surgery for elderly men in rural China.

There will also be a return of the Pickle Zach’s — moonshine chased by pickle juice — for rmb25, all funds to Maovember.

And there will be happy hour throughout the tournament, music by acoustic funk band Dirty City (buy their CD and half the money goes to Maovember), and lots more.

The tournament starts at 2 PM sharp, so it’s best for players to get there early, especially if they want to practice. See the poster below for the venue address.

Events | Paddy O’Shea’s to host awesome quiz and draw on Wednesday

Standard

maovember 2015 paddy o'stache quiz

If you have any brains, take them to sports bar Paddy O’Shea’s tomorrow night — Wednesday — when it doubles as Paddy O’Stache’s and hosts its second annual Maovember quiz.

Expect quiz master Jo to scramble what’s left of your cells with his brain-teasers. (Tip: When in doubt, choose b.)

And expect a most excellent draw, with tickets just rmb20. Prizes include a box of 10 ciders (four Belgian, four English and two American, value of rmb500), a bottle of Jameson (rmb488), three bottles of Prosecco Jeio (rmb258 each), a mystery box of five wines (who knows!?), two Paddy’s T-shirts (rmb100 each), six 400ml Warsteiner glasses (rmb150), and Scottish beer. Plus, vouchers for Paddy’s.

There is an optional entry fee of rmb100 per team, which gets you a massive tower of Tiger beer with which to inspire answers. All of it goes to funding cataract surgery for elderly men in rural China — the money, not the beer.

So grab some friends, form a team, and use your collective wisdom to secure victory at the Paddy’s Maovember quiz!

(Paddy O’Shea’s is close to Sanlitun and Gongti, just across from the Australian Embassy. The address is 28 Dongzhimen Wai Dajie 东直门外大街28号, the phone number is 6415-6389. For more details, see here.)
