Event | Anuual MVB party at Paddy O’Shea’s

Standard

The annual Maovember party at Paddy O’Shea’s aka Paddy maO’Shea’s is set for November 29. Expect lots of Friday fun with a few new twists.

As usual, we’ll have the Jameson pickleback booth, the “darts for charity” game and the presentation of a cheque to Tom Stader, founder of Maovember’s 2019 partner, The Library Project.

This year, there will also be a raffle, a chance to “buy a song” from the live bands playing, and a booth where those without ‘staches can get one painted on! Plus a few more surprises. The party starts at 9 PM!

Here are a few photos from previous Paddy MVB parties.

Puppy power | Maovember’s Dog Pub Crawl 3

Standard

Call it paws for a cause. Peking’s pooches powered through the city’s streets on Sunday for a pub crawl with a doggone good mission: The Library Project.

Dozens of dogs had some 40 humans in tow for beverages at XL Bar & Restaurant (mulled wine), Jing-A (beer) and Paddy O’Shea’s (hot cider). The day included a ‘ruff-le’ at each stop with prizes like hoodies, T-shirts and beanies from the pubs and CHEERS wine, Hulu restaurant gift certificates and Jia Rui cheese. The dogs spent the day munching treats courtesy of Penny’s Food Studio.

Dog Pub Crawl 3 raised 4,300 rmb via pre-paid entry fees plus 1550 rmb from ticket sales and donations during the event for a total of 5850 rmb / 58,500 mao. That’s a Dog Pub Crawl record, which is great, but just as important were the good vibes and delighted dogs all day long.

100 percent of the money is already in Library Project’s hands and, along with revenue from other Maovember events, will be used to provide books, chairs, tables, teacher training and more at a rural Hebei school. We’ll update when that reading room is ready to go.

Thanks to all involved — the pubs, ruff-le prize donors, and participants and dogs who made it possible.

SumMaory | Tianjin Corn Toss Classic at WE Brewery

Standard

WE Brewery in Tianjin held an epic corn toss tourney on Sunday, with 16 teams, many clad in custom-made corn-toss themed outfits, fighting it out for six hours before a champion was crowned. Team O’Mahony edged out Team Cornhole of Glory in a close finale as a raucous crowd cheered.

The tournament started mid-afternoon and people enjoyed WE brews and snacks during the games. Many also participated in the “tab war”, with the day’s highest bar bill going to charity, and bought raffle tickets for nice prizes from Shangri-La Hotel,O’Mahony Irish PubFish and Potato (Joy City), Mi Salsa and WE Brewery.

The event raised rmb8000 from entrance fees alone, as each of the 16 teams paid rmb500. Also, over rmb 3000 was made from raffle tickets, 3460 from tab war and rmb3350 from personal donations, including a whopping rmb2500 donation from the unofficial “Mayor of Tianjin.” That’s nearly rmb18,000 for Library Project from this fun-filled day!

The event is the brainchild of WE Brewery owner Steve Wang, who is also a steering group member for Maovember.

Here are some photos of the action.

Event | WE Brewery corn toss tourney in Tianjin

Standard

WE Brewery is Maovember HQ in Tianjin with its annual corn toss extravaganza and this one will the biggest yet. The slate is already full with 16 teams signed up, including numerous returnees. Expect a busy afternoon of corn tossing to narrow that field down to one winner.

Owner Steve Wang is also doing a repeat of his “tab war” fundraiser — the team or table with the highest bar tab at day’s end will see their bill donated to this year’s Maovember partner, The Library Project.

On top of that, Wang has organized an impressive range of raffle prizes, including hotel, restaurant and even salsa dancing vouchers. The donors include Shangri-La Hotel, O’Mahony’s Irish Pub, Fish and Potato (Joy City), Mi Salsa and WE Brewery.

It’s shaping up to be a fun afternoon in Tianjin. You can see WE Brewery’s post about the event here.

WE Brewery has been a long-time supporter of Maovember and that even includes bringing its beer to Beijing!

SumMaory | Beijinger Pizza Mow Down at Groovy Schiller’s

Standard

Maovember supporters had fun trying tasty pies last night from the ‘final four’ venues in this year’s Beijinger Pizza Cup — since narrowed down to two!

Attendees paid rmb100 and got a slice each from Bottega, Great Leap, Q Mex and Saporita, plus two beers and a slice of pizza from host Groovy Schiller’s, plus a ticket to win a case of beer donated by Jing-A. Fantastic that all 24 people who signed up, also showed up, for a speedy affair that lasted 75 minutes from first slice to last. Then followed by a few hours of beverages.

Each of the 24 pizza eaters also voted for their favorite pie: that result will be announced after the finale of the Pizza Cup

Thanks to Groovy Schiller’s for hosting, The Beijinger (Mike, Vic, Pablo and Echo) for organizing the event on two days’ notice and Bottega, Q Mex and Saporita for donating pizza. The event raised rmb2650 (26,500 mao).

SumMaory | Mao-a-thon in Ritan Park

Standard

We had runners. And walkers. And strollers. And even one napper at this year’s “mao-a-thon” in-Ritan Park. The event is a more modest version of the 75 km walk Mike “Mao-a-thon Man” Wester did in 2017 as part of his month-long 900-km journey.

People could complete 28 laps (42 km) in Ritan Park as individuals (Loren Heinold finished!) or relay teams. In true Maovember spirit, participants brought water, oranges, bananas, chocolate, wine and more to share. And were further fueled four times during the day with tasty pizza treats donated by Baozza.

Thanks to all who joined the mao-a-thon, Baozza for keeping us fueled, and those who shuttled those pizza treats between between Q Mex and Ritan Park.

The mao-a-thon raised 12,450 (124,500 mao) for this year’s Maovember partner The Library Project. Here are some photos from the day.

SumMaory | Maovember launch party at Hulu

Standard

The Maovember launch party at Hulu had a light turnout given it was a Beijing Friday stacked with Halloween, Day of the Dead and other events, but those who attended had a sweet and scary time. Check out this setup provided by Hulu!

Guests enjoyed a made-to-order mulled wine stand, a free-flow of tasty Hulu snacks and Halloween fun courtesy of the staff in full costume, including ‘syringe’ shots and White Rabbit candy treats (no tricks, only treats). Plus, Jing-A donated two cases of beer and attendees could win bottles with our solo beer pong game.

Many thanks to Hulu for going above and beyond (as usual!). We raised rmb1800 (18,000 mao), including a donation from the proprietor, IgnaceMr World’s Favorite RestaurantLecleir.
